Spinal Tap to Guest and Perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Get ready to crank your TV volume up to 11: Spinal Tap is making their first late-night television appearance in more than 15 years.

The legendary satirical metal band will both sit down as guests and perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, September 8, with Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) taking the stage together. They’ll be joined by director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner), the fictional documentarian behind This Is Spinal Tap.

Their in-character visit with Jimmy Kimmel comes just days before the theatrical release of the long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Set roughly forty years after the events of the original film, the new installment—directed once again by Reiner—finds the estranged band members reuniting after 15 years to put on “one final show.”

That timeline lines up with their real-world late-night history: their last appearances were in 2009, when they played The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote their third album, Back from the Dead. Earlier visits include a 2000 spot on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and their classic 1984 musical guest performance on Saturday Night Live.

Together, Spinal Tap and DiBergi belong to a short list of guests who have appeared on late-night shows fully in character, alongside the likes of Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello), Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens), Super Dave Osbourne (Bob Einstein), and Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen).

As of press time, there were no other guests scheduled to join Kimmel Monday night, suggesting JKL will be devoting the entire hour (after Kimmel's monologue) to Spinal Tap.
