One of Seth Meyers’ guests tonight won’t have to make a long trip to the studio. Writing supervisor (and Paul Rudd lookalike) Seth Reiss has been a part of the writing staff for Late Night since the show’s launch in 2014. Prior to joining the show, he was head writer for The Onion, and also wrote for IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! TV series. He has been nominated for five Emmys as part of the writers' room for Late Night.
The writer has formally guested on his employer’s show once before. In November 2022, he sat for an interview alongside Will Tracy to promote The Menu, the black comedy film they penned together.
Reiss' latest appearance comes in advance of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, a romantic fantasy flick starring Colin Farrell, Margot Robbie, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge that he wrote. The film opens in theaters Friday, September 19th.
Reiss has also made dozens of other appearances on the show—typically in character, but occasionally as himself. His (masked) resemblance to actor Paul Rudd has made him the subject of a fan-favorite recurring gag. After singer Lizzo mistook Reiss for Rudd during a “Day Drinking” segment, Meyers had Reiss come out for a side-by-side comparison when the real Rudd visited Late Night.
Unlike most other Late Night writers, Reiss doesn’t maintain a public online presence—at least not as himself. For years, the writer has been the voice behind the Twitter/X account for Matt Albie, the fictional comedy writer played by Matthew Perry on Aaron Sorkin’s short-lived Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. (Ever the prolific scribe, Reiss even went as far as writing a faux oral history for the fictional sketch show in the vein of the SNL tome Live From New York, and creating a fake Amazon page for the non-existent book.)
Reiss parlayed his penchant for Studio 60 parody into his work on Late Night, writing and starring in the memorable pre-tape “The Sorkin Sketch” when Sorkin guested on the program in 2014.
Reiss’s other upcoming projects include two more films. The writer has re-teamed with The Menu director John Crowley for the upcoming psychological thriller Five. He also wrote 42.6 Years, a romantic comedy for Amazon Studios starring Andy Samberg and Jean Smart.
Reiss visits Late Night Tuesday, September 9th. Meyers' other guests tonight include Chance the Rapper and Kentucky governor Andy Beshear.
