Policy experts have raised concerns that Australia’s social media ban for under-16s could leave an entire generation dangerously uninformed about the minute-by-minute status of highly sensitive US military matters accidentally leaked by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The ban, which aims to reduce screen addiction, has been criticised by analysts who say it could inadvertently block teenagers from receiving what many have come to regard as their primary source of information about potential bombings of third world countries.
“It’s a huge national risk,” media researcher Dr Karen Doyle said. “Millions of Aussie teens are going to wake up each morning without an unintentional briefing on the bombing of Yemen.
“And when Hegseth accidentally posts on Facebook videos of American aircraft illegally bombing Venezuelan fishing boats, young people are going to miss out on that too”.
The Australian Government insists the ban is not designed to interfere with US defence literacy amongst young people. “We recognise the vital role that leaked classified information from idiot Trump Administration officials plays in educating young people. We encourage parents to take screenshots if necessary,” a spokesperson said.
